Willys Radio Jeep (1943)

The Wireless Set No19 (WS19) was fitted to just about all British Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) and was a most vital piece of equipment, in constant use to relay precise position and actions back to Regimental and Division Headquarters.
Yes, that’s a Daimler Dingo in the background ! Discover just how important these radios were…

Our Willys radio Jeep was built in late 1943 in the USA, then shipped to UK and delivered to the British Army, in support of the build-up to D-Day, the invasion of Europe through landings in Normandy and the subsequent North West Europe Campaign.

Every number matches, with the records held by the Royal Logistics Corps archives, verifying the Wartime bonnet census number, along with its post-War Army registration number allocated in 1948.  Also present, is the British army stamp added to the original chassis by the REME, when it was delivered in early 1944.

Post-War, this Willys Jeep remained in service until the MOD sold it at auction to a Yorkshire farmer in 1958, who kept it until 1984, when it was sold as a project to the previous owner. A full nut and bolt restoration followed, preserving every possible original part and detail.  Carefully maintained over the last 40 years, the vehicle is still what the meticulous 80s restoration produced, and remains an exceptional example of the many Jeep survivors.

The typical display includes comprehensive original British Army kit, and many items that would have been used for Reconnaissance operations, including complete small-arms weapons systems and full personal equipment.

The fully operational radio is an American manufactured WS19 Mk2, which includes the original B set (although no longer legal to transmit) and intercom.
