24 June 1944 – Derrycunihy Casualties

The regiment’s primary transport ship MT-72 Derrycunihy (carrying HQ, A and C squadrons) was sunk on the morning of Saturday 24 June 1944. Learn more about what happened that day.

Beyond the 189 killed or missing listed below, for most casualties, we have no further personal details. Where additional information is available, a dedicated record is linked.

Regimental losses on 24th June were actually much higher, given a further 150 men were injured or wounded. Many were quickly returned to England on hospital ships, never to fight with the regiment; while others were rescued or struggled ashore before rejoining their comrades, as the regiment was re-established over the following weeks.

Total losses 339. That’s around 45% of the entire regiment.

All subsequent losses in action, as 43rd Recce regiment fought through Normandy, Belgium, Holland and into Germany, before the end of their war near Bremen, are available here.
