Humber Scout Car (HSC)

The Humber Scout Car is another exceptionally rare vehicle, which we’re lucky to have in our group.
Named to ‘A’ squadron, this one is based in The Netherlands, as part of our Dutch contingent.

Scouts were particularly light and fast, compared to other armour, and armed with a Bren Gun. Developed from the Daimler Dingo by Rootes Group and Humber in 1942, it was usually crewed by two (a Driver / Radio Operator and Commander). There was also an emergency seat for third crew member. A second Bren could be mounted on the roof, and operated from within the protection of the light armour, which was only effective against small-arms.

With 4 wheel drive and a top speed of over 60mph, it really was one of the fastest vehicles on the battlefield and ideal for recce work. They were often used as a Commander’s “Rover”, so that the C.O., or Squadron leader could stay very close to front-line action.

What was that like? Read what one war correspondent experienced in a commander's car, over a couple of days with 43rd Recce here.

While Scouts were not a core vehicle for 43rd Recce, but there are indications some were used.
